Please join us at American Legion Post 277 to commemorate the Four Chaplains who sacrificed themselves to save others. All are welcome.
On February 3, 1943, the SS Dorchester was torpedoed in the North Atlantic. Four Army chaplains—Lt. George Fox (Methodist), Lt. Alexander Goode (Jewish), Lt. John Washington (Catholic), and Lt. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed)—worked together to distribute life jackets and guide passengers to lifeboats. When the supply ran out, each chaplain removed his own life jacket and gave it to a frightened sailor.
Survivors reported that the last they saw of the four chaplains, they were standing arm in arm on the sloping deck, praying together as the ship disappeared beneath the waves. Their selfless courage embodies true heroism.
We welcome all Legionnaires, community members, families, and friends to join us in honoring these heroes and the values they embodied.
